Founded in 1908, Atlas Heating & Air-Conditioning Co. is the oldest heating and ventilating company in the Bay Area and a significant part of San Francisco’s landscape, having helped to rebuild the city after the 1906 earthquake. Initially established by George Tuck as a three-man operation, Atlas quickly became a leader in innovative heating technology. The company began by designing and manufacturing wood and coal furnaces and pioneered developments such as the first integrated blower furnace and safety pilot light, significantly advancing the heating industry.
With a focus on quality and innovation, Atlas introduced gas furnaces during a time when most homes relied on less efficient heating methods. This move was key as they utilized steel in furnace designs, making them not only lighter but also easier to install. By the mid-20th century, Atlas had extended its operations beyond the Bay Area, supplying furnaces for military bases and significant projects as far away as Alaska and the Panama Canal.
Throughout its history, Atlas has been involved in heating notable structures, including the Civic Auditorium and the Stonestown Shopping Center, making its mark on the architectural fabric of the region. Over the decades, the company has maintained a commitment to excellence, guided by four generations of the Tuck family, ensuring a unique continuity of service and family values in business operations.
Today, under the leadership of Bob Tuck, a UC Berkeley graduate, Atlas remains at the forefront of heating and air conditioning solutions, representing major national brands and still specializing in residential and light commercial HVAC services. Their team is known for excellent customer service and knowledgeable repair and installation expertise, making Atlas Heating & Air Conditioning a respected name in the industry.
