Description

Linn County Rural Electric Cooperative (REC) is a not-for-profit, member-owned electric distribution cooperative based in Iowa. With a service area that spans portions of six counties—Linn, Johnson, Jones, Cedar, Iowa, and Benton—the cooperative proudly serves over 33,200 members, including both residential and commercial accounts in rural and suburban regions. Founded in 1938, Linn County REC is dedicated to providing safe, reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable electricity while ensuring exceptional member service.

The cooperative operates on the fundamental principle of consumer ownership, meaning members, referred to as 'members' rather than 'customers', have a voice in the governance of the organization. Each September, members elect a board of directors who are accountable to the cooperative's membership, enabling a democratic approach to decision-making and policy-setting.

One of the distinguishing features of the cooperative model is its commitment to returning profits to the members. Since its inception, Linn County REC has returned over $21 million in capital credits to its members, emphasizing its focus on community benefit. The cooperative adheres to a set of seven guiding principles which encompass voluntary membership, democratic member control, economic participation, autonomy, education and training, cooperation among cooperatives, and a concern for the community. These principles not only reflect the values of the cooperative but also foster a supportive environment where community members can collaborate and contribute to sustainable development.

In striving for excellence in service, Linn County REC offers a variety of programs including rebates for energy efficiency, educational resources, and emergency assistance programs. The cooperative is also devoted to fostering a culture of safety and awareness among its members, providing resources and training on electrical safety and energy conservation. Ultimately, Linn County REC stands as a model for community-driven energy solutions, working tirelessly to meet the evolving needs of its members.
