Description

North Arkansas Electric Cooperative (NAEC) is a member-owned electric utility that has been serving Northern Arkansas since its incorporation in 1939. Energizing its first line a year later, NAEC has grown significantly over the decades and is one of the prominent distribution cooperatives in the state, currently serving approximately 36,000 member accounts across parts of eight counties. With over 4,500 miles of power lines and 27 substations, NAEC effectively meets the energy needs of its diverse customer base, encompassing residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.

As a not-for-profit cooperative, NAEC operates under a unique model in which it is governed by a nine-member board of directors, elected by its members. This structure fosters a close-knit community approach, ensuring that the needs and preferences of local consumers are prioritized. Surpluses generated beyond operational costs are refunded to members in the form of capital credits, exemplifying the cooperative's commitment to its constituents.

NAEC also values community involvement beyond providing electricity. The cooperative's initiatives extend to community development, support for small businesses, and enhancement of local healthcare and educational services. In 2000, NAEC became part of the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives alliance, a network designed to enhance service delivery and foster innovation among electric co-ops nationwide. This affiliation helps NAEC leverage a broad range of resources to better serve its member communities.

The cooperative emphasizes transparency and community engagement, hosting annual meetings and regular communication through publications like the Messenger. NAEC plays a significant role in promoting energy efficiency, offering programs that include energy audits, efficiency loans, and educational resources aimed at promoting sustainable practices among its members. By embodying the cooperative principles of democratic member control, education, and concern for community, North Arkansas Electric Cooperative remains dedicated to not only providing reliable electricity but also enhancing the quality of life for all those it serves.
